Remember Apple’s App Store ad campaign from a few years ago? “There’s an app for that.” Well, when it comes to clothing, there are apps for that; many apps, in fact, but not many of them cover all my bases.
Shopping for clothes online is fraught with peril, particularly number 4 on my list. Size. One of the benefits of Target, Macy’s or other retail locations is the opportunity to try on clothes; if they fit, you buy, if they don’t, you don’t.
How do you get clothing that fits perfectly? You gotta be lucky. Sure, Amazon, JC Penney, Macy’s, and even Walmart sell clothing online, but the problem is all the same. Selection is limited, you have to wait days to try on clothing to see if it fits. If you have the money you can do what all the rich people do.
A 3D body scan. Is there an app for that? Not really, but it won’t be long.
Arielle Pardes on Meghan Litchfield:
Most of the time, she’d buy jeans one size up to fit her hips, then ask a tailor take them in at the waist.
That’s common. So, what’s the solution to getting clothes you want, that also fit?
Litchfield created her own store, RedThread.
Custom made for your most flattering fit, and shipped to your door in a week, in 3 easy steps from your phone.
Indeed, there is an app for that. Unfortunately, it’s your camera app and the photos are selfies, but you get the idea, right? The future is in custom fit clothing that starts with a 3D image.
Our patent-pending technology, and a human fit analyst, create your one-of-a kind design using a 3D body model.
You can also see where this is going, too. Custom fit, custom tailoring, and anything custom comes with what you see on my list. Price.
We combined the ancient art of bespoke tailoring with our 3D Fit™ design technology to create your perfect fit, guaranteed.
I can get a guarantee from clothing at Macy’s or Walmart or Target or even JC Penney online– buy what I think might fit, then have it sent to me, then try it on. If it fits, we’re done. If not, I can send it back.
Those steps are humbug but at least the retail stores have an app and I can see ahead of time which items I should shop for, discard, or order for the home fitting.
RedThread is an idea whose time has almost come. A 3D scan of your body, combined with some measurements, that then get you customized clothing.
For a price.
That’s almost how the rich people do it, right?
RedThread uses a three step process.
- Customize your style
- Take the Fit Quiz
- Scan your measurements
Obviously, there is a problem with this process, though it may take less time than running out to the mall or waiting for Amazon Prime to decide when to ship something to your house to try one.
- Inventory – not many items available on RedThread
- Location – as with any online retailer, it takes time
- Price – this is custom tailoring made easier (still expensive)
What I want is for a retailer to pay attention to my list; an app, selection, 3D augmented reality measurements, guarantee, and priced to a point where I can afford to shop.
I want an iPhone app for pants. And shirts, blouses, dresses and skirts, and t-shirts, coats would be nice, but priced so I won’t have to sell my yacht to help pay for the clothes, and yet all available from the comfy confines of an iPhone app.
