What makes Apple a special technology gadget maker? Style? Sure. Service? Uh huh. Ecosystem? Of course. Design? Check. Apple’s products are identifiable as being easy to use, well designed, durable, long-lasting, and valuable (despite the so-called Apple Tax).
Every now and again we see a product or line of products that look as if they were designed and made by Apple but are not. An app that comes to mind is the Duet app for iPad and Mac. Yep, ex-Apple engineers. I bring this up because my husband has a new toy. the Motiv Ring.
Think, well, a ring. But not just a pretty ring. A fitness ring with built-in security features. You know, like Apple Watch, but less more and more convenience.
Motiv Ring, like Watch, tracks your heart rate and displays collected data on an iPhone app. It also counts steps, exercise time, calories, and more– including something Watch does not do well. Sleep tracking.
This unassuming little device– it’s a ring– is waterproof to 165 feet; far more than Apple Watch, and it packs 3-day battery life. Watch will get me through the day, but not enough to go through an entire day and night.
The latest Motiv Ring version allows you to use two-step verification for online accounts (some, not all) and the app works on iOS and Android. But you can see where’s it going. Future updates promise Face ID-like and Touch ID-like personal identification, as well as password-less logins.
Battery life and charging? Three days. Easy.
Apple makes what arguably is the smartest of the smartwatch class. Motiv Ring is a smart ring and one of the most Apple-like techno-gadgets you’ve ever seen. $200. I have little doubt that Apple– with the $10-billion plus it spends on R&D to find the next great thing– has worked on a Motiv-like ring. Or, Apple Glasses. Or, Apple brain implants.
Motiv Ring is here today and could use a few million more customers and a billion dollars or two to further developer. Why? A ring is easier to use and maintain than Apple Watch, especially for health tracking. Apple can afford the acquisition and a Motiv Ring and Apple Watch would make an excellent combo. Apple bought Beats Music for a few billion and it’s likely Motiv Ring would be less.
I ordered one.
