Many. As in many more than we think. Apple gives Mac users plenty of such writing tools though not necessarily tools for your particular writing purpose. Remember TextEdit? Think bare bones notes but without an iOS counterpart for iPhone and iPad. What about Notes itself?
That’s a favorite among the O’Brien folks who slave over a hot keyboard much of the day. Notes is competent, shows up on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, but remains devoid of most of the standard word processor tools. Pages? Again, like Notes, Pages is everywhere, plus it has templates for almost any job, but it ain’t Word or even Nisus Writer (a fav).
Mac360’s Barbara Marie Brannan says the two best writer’s tools for Apple customers are Ulysses and Scrivener. No argument from me. If you can afford the best. Ms. Babs also likes WriteNow from the ancient past and Bean because it’s good and free but somehow became fixated on WonderPen. I wonder why. If you’re a real writer you might like Mellel because it’s a favorite of writers who prefer a degree of complication in the processing of words.
Christine Chan has a good list of iPhone and iPad apps that some writers use, but I cannot imagine using an iPhone for anything serious and I have yet to get into bed with an iPad Pro keyboard that can satisfy me.
I like Bear and it may be the most improved notes-like writer’s tool available but I have grown averse to subscription applications and tend to look for alternatives. If you deem yourself a pro you might like the pro version of Nisus Writer, though it smacks of the 20th century with all the tools scattered about.
A favorite that won’t go away is iA Writer which sits between Notes and Pages but has more tools than the former and fewer distractions than the latter. It’s priced right to write, too. Think Bean Lite wannabe.
Writer’s tools– whether notes apps, full fledged word processors, and in-between minimalist apps– are growing in number and have become much like clothes. We have and use more than one. Personal taste rules. But we’re still not paying by the month.
