Tops on my Apple list are Activity, Alarms, Calendar, Reminders, Heart Rate, Messages, Music, Phone, Weather, et al. All free. All very good. But that collection isn’t enough. Watch can do much more and there are plenty of useful apps if you’re willing to put in a little time to make them happen.
Michael Simon and Leif Johnson made a list of the best paid Apple Watch apps of 2018, and while there are good ones, there are better Watch apps available (which is what makes up my list; paid and free).
Cardiogram – Just get it. Cargiogram is free and tracks your exercise, heart rate, resting periods, and sleep. I get more benefit from it because I keep my watch on 22/7. 22? It takes a mere two hours to charge Watch and I do that while slaving over a hot keyboard.
Dark Sky – Get this one, too. Dark Sky is a micro-forecast app. It displays weather conditions but the claim to fame is what’s about to happen near you. Worth every penny.
Unlox – This app once was MacID. Unlox unlocks your Mac with Face ID, gives notifications, manages the Mac’s audio, and lets you check the Mac notebooks battery level [pauses to catch breath] and shares the clipboard from iPhone to Mac and much more.
PCalc – Get this one, too. Calculator on iPhone works OK, and there are dozens of calculator apps for iPhone and some for Watch. PCalc is the best and worthy of the price tag. Plus, there’s an excellent Mac version, too.
It doesn’t take long to come up with good list of third party Watch apps. Fantastical works better on iPhone and iPad than Apple’s own Calendar app, but Reminders is second to none, and Clock cannot be beat. Need to count steps? Pedometer is free and nothing works better. Steps is steps.
I live in Chicago and that means large parking garages and malls. Cars can get lost. QuickPark is a good way to find your car and the app is free. Drafts requires a change in your workflow habits but is worthy of a try, if anything for the Watch version. The Score works better on Watch than ESPN.
Watch App Hint #1: Prune. Don’t allow apps to automatically install on Watch. Use complications and multiple screens to flip through for easier access. Apple’s Watch app launcher sucks.
