Are we 21st century dwellers losing touch with reality? If so, what’s the cause? Let’s blame it on Apple. Why? Apple gets blamed for everything else, including global warming and smartphone addiction, so why not?
M.G. Siegler, writing in 500-ish Words (actually, 789– I counted) thinks those in Silicon Valley are arrogant and losing touch with reality. California, huh?
What company epitomizes California and Silicon Valley more than Apple? Is Apple to blame for people losing touch with reality? And what does that even mean?
People — really smart people — saying some of the most vacuous things. Words that if they were able to take a step outside of their own heads and hear, they’d be embarrassed by.
I see that on cable TV news which is more East Coast than Silicon Valley, so maybe the proliferation of iPhones throughout the world is causing the problem. Or, Facebook. That could be it.
This isn’t only about Facebook — far from it. That’s just the most high profile and timely example of a company suffering from some of this.
Losing touch with reality does not seem to be just a Silicon Valley thing, or a Facebook thing, and certainly not an Apple thing. But I’m not getting plenty of examples from Siegler’s missive, though I understand the sentiment.
I feel like this is increasingly everywhere I look around tech. It’s an industry filled with some of the most brilliant people in the world, which makes it all the more disappointing.
Again, other than cable TV news, and Facebook, and true Fake News, some examples would be beneficial. Maybe you can’t have examples in an article on a website named 500-ish Words but since it was nearly 800 words anyway, those extra words could have used some examples.
I’d wager everyone reading this will have clear and obvious examples of what I’m talking about in their own circles — even if only in their own virtual circles. This is everywhere.
Oh, yeah. But those are my examples.
I don’t know the cause of this. Perhaps we can blame part of it on Trump…
Yeah, crazy things are being said, but remember that most Americans voted for alternatives to be president, and cable TV news has been around awhile, and so have crazies. In the past, they didn’t have as much of a voice as they do today.
If it bleeds, it leads.
How does Apple enter into this? Well, it’s in Silicon Valley. And half the U.S. owns an iPhone. Is it the other half that is out of touch with reality?
Our industry is still filled with a lot of great, empathetic people. But the worst of us are increasingly drowning out the best. Because saying something tone deaf will always reverberate more on our current internet than something thoughtful. And the fact that it’s increasingly people in some position of power saying silly things just exacerbates all of this.
I understand, but it isn’t just Silicon Valley that seems to have lost touch with reality, and certainly Apple isn’t to blame. Tim Berners-Lee, perhaps. Or, Adam and Eve. Reality is changing fast and I’m convinced humans are not adapting as quickly as change arrives.
That’s 500-ish words. Not all of them mine.
