You know what iPhone and iPad have that the Mac does not? An alarm clock. More specifically, a Clock with options beyond just telling time. Open your iPhone or iPad and look for the Clock app. This is what the Mac needs.
The iOS Clock app is packed with useful options. It starts with a World Clock. Add as many cities as you need and you’ll get the local time for each, regardless of time zone. The Bedtime feature is new and remarkably useful. Set the time to go to bed and wakeup to get a full night’s sleep. Even set it for various days of the week (I sleep later on Saturday).
Clock also has a Stopwatch with a lap option, and a Time to count down from a specific number of minutes. None of these features are available in macOS High Sierra. Perhaps the best feature in Clock is the Alarm function. Set a time, set an alarm sound, set the snooze button, set for the day of the week or a repeat, and Clock will sound the alarm on time, every time, and more importantly, skips past the Do Not Disturb option. An alarm is more important than Do Not Disturb.
What would make Clock for iOS better? First, make a Mac version that works the same way. Second, make the alarms and settings sync between devices using iCloud.
Mac users have a few options that work better than the clumsy Date and Time settings in System Preferences. One of them is TinyAlarm. It’s an inexpensive alarm clock that lives in the Mac’s Menubar. Click to set an alarm.
TinyAlarm’s interface is nothing like Clock on iOS but the functions are similar.
Add a name to the alarm, set the exact time or number of minutes until the alarm goes off. You can even add a snooze function and play an alert sound (from music or a built-in sound). From then on, TinyAlarm runs the alarm and sound at the appropriate time.
While you can set up multiple alarms, I would like to see more options for day of the week, weekends, etc., but TinyAlarm is about as close to Clock for iPhone and iPad as you can get.
