You know what they say, right? You can never have enough fonts. I have thousands. Maybe more. Some old, some borrowed, some new. Fonts are almost free these days, but the really good ones come from Adobe and are priced like a company that loves profits.
Mac font lovers probably have a few tools to help using fonts the right way and that includes PopChar, a display utility that has been around the Mac since I started using the Mac back in the last century. PopChar does what isn’t so easy to do. It lets you display all the characters from a specific font; not just the ones you see on screen.
This is what a designer’s eye requires and PopChar delivers.
PopChar works with all modern applications that support Unicode. It makes it easy to navigate and search within fonts that contain thousands of characters. Search for characters by their names, find fonts that contain certain characters, explore the character set of fonts, collect your favorite characters, insert HTML symbols.
With a few keystrokes your Mac can display all the fonts in your collections, and list all the characters for each font (and there are far more than most of us know about).
Simply put, PopChar makes it simple to type any character from any font installed on your Mac, including hundreds of characters not easily inserted into a document by using the keyboard. It starts with the letter P in the Mac’s Menubar. Click the P and you get a list of details and characters for each font.
There’s a built-in magnifier tool and an option to search fonts by name, Unicode number, or pasted text. Some fonts can be found simply by drawing the font’s shape. You can even find and insert emoji into documents in the latest version.
PopChar gives you more options than you’ll be able to remember, but everything is available with a click to the P in the Menubar. Search to find similar characters between fonts. Check the keyboard combos to insert fonts, but remember, there are multiple methods to insert a font– plain text, formatted text, and basic font. Search for specific characters or symbols in any or all fonts.
Sweet, right? Fontaholics love PopChar because no other Mac app has more font-specific functions. Preview every font, check ligatures, make font sheets, find and use specific font emoji with skin tone variants. Need foreign language font details? It’s in there. There is a try-before-you-buy option, too.
