House Design did the trick a few years ago. It’s inexpensive, simple enough to setup and use, mimics your home’s layout complete with furniture, and even the 3D option doesn’t cost much.
For Mac users on a budget– a tight budget– there’s Sweet Home 3D that comes with a gazillion 3D models. For free. You’ll need those models, because Sweet Home 3D is more like a drafting application than a home designer app. But it works great and even lets you drop in furniture you don’t have so you can see how your home will look with furniture you can’t afford.
Start by laying out your home’s interior plan in 2D.
Add doors or windows where appropriate or where you’d like them to be. Then add furniture to the plan. Sweet Home 3D comes with hundreds of furniture pieces for every room. The color in each room can be changed with a click. Ditto for furniture and accessories.
Then the fun begins. Add photorealistic photos and videos and customize even the light and sunlight to get a better idea of how a room will look from different angles, different lights, different furniture pieces.
Yep. All this is free to use for both personal and commercial use.
Sweet Home 3D requires Java on your Mac (also runs on Windows PCs using Java). If you can handle that, you’re good to go.
