Have you seen those television commercials for the Jitterbug cell phone? It’s the one with the simple to operate controls with giant buttons. A smartphone it ain’t.
Jitterbug is aimed at senior citizens who don’t want to delve into all the complexity of today’s Apple, Android, and Microsoft smartphones, still need to make a phone call vs. browsing and email, and where large buttons make a visual difference. Here’s a Mac calculator app that works the same way.
The calculator is called Handy and it works pretty much like you’d expect. It’s a large calculator with large buttons that are easy to see, easy to click.
Just as the Jitterbug feature phone comes with a very limited feature set, Handy comes with only the most basic of features.
Handy comes in a single color so you won’t have to muck around in settings or preferences. The buttons are big and so is the calculations window. A calculated result can be copied to the Mac’s clipboard with a click making it easy to paste into a document or email.
When Handy is being used, the calculator color is bright. When you switch to another app, the calculator dims but doesn’t go out of sight. Though simple and elegant, Handy is a calculator so it does calculator functions and formulas for programmers and scientists, but it also handles the easiest of calculations.
For example, type in 5+9+37648-9805+(3879×78) and you’ll get the right answer, so you won’t have to worry about whether or not you typed in the correct number. And, there’s a memory function.
Handy works well, looks great and it’s difficult to beat the price. Free.
