Those all make the Top 10 List of Most Used Apps in the O’Brien compound, but those are necessity apps. I have one app that makes my day over and over again, and it’s also responsible for a little weight gain since getting married (and it has nothing to do with children).
The Mac app that you deserve to give to yourself this holiday season is MacGourmet (or, MacGourmet Deluxe).
MacGourmet is to recipes and food what iTunes is to music, or what iPhoto is to photos, or what Garageband is to, well, you get the idea. This app isn’t just a digital recipe collector. It’s a personal food and drink management experience on your Mac.
MacGourmet lets you create, edit, organize and share recipes, yes. But it’s also the repository for the perfect food shopping list, and a way to manage wine, beer, and cheese.
Recipes can be organized and categorized effortlessly. Think Vegetarian, Gluten-free, Sugar-free, Low Fat, or recipes from your crazy Aunt Ellen. This wonderful app is so thoughtful that you not only get a recipe, you get a list of the ingredients, directions, and preparation steps, including photos, and diet and nutrition information.
Think step-by-step. Think food pairings. Think nutrition.
Oh, and if you’re worried about taking your Mac into the kitchen, don’t. Use the iPhone or iPad version of MacGourmet and keep everything you need for a meal for one or 20 right in your hand.
MacGourmet is a gift I gave myself a few years ago and it’s one I look forward to using far more than Safari or Mail or iTunes or iPhoto. They’re so pedestrian.
