Goodbye, Arrid Extra Dry

Was this a gift or was someone trying to tell me something?

I'm starting to think more about the daily decisions I make. Gone from the pantry is Peter Pan Peanut Butter (Creamy). Too much sugar. Also gone is Arrid Extra Dry.

Years ago a Japanese woman from Southern California cut my hair. She did a good job and I came back regularly. One day she handed me a small package, a gift (of appreciation, I assumed).

Inside the package was a small bag, and inside the bag was a crystaline rock. The simple, foldover card identified the crystal as a natural body deodorant.

I was young and didn’t put two and two together, so I assumed the package truly was a gift. I used the crystal in place of my Arrid roll on. It worked.

To activate the crystal’s pure mineral salts required nothing more than a little warm water, then rubbing the crystal into the right places (I have two).

After a few months, the crystal had worn down to a pebble, which I discarded. At almost the same time I moved and lost my source of crystal (mineral salts).

Last year, during recovery, I read something about the amounts and sources of aluminum in the American diet. We’re being bombarded by aluminum in ever growing amounts.

Yet another article indicated that aluminum may play a part in Alzheimers, so I did some research. Not on Alzheimers, on the aluminum which makes up a good part of spray and roll on deodorants.

Until last year I was a steady user of Arrid Extra Dry. It was expensive but it worked.

A little Googling found The Crystal, obviously a version of what I had tried a few decades earlier.

Additional search showed that Howard Stern calls it ‘fantastic’ and it’s sold at nearby Long’s Drugs. I threw out the Arrid Extra Dry and bought a couple of Crystals, and a roll-on.

The packaging says The Crystal may last six months (far longer than I was getting out of a can of Arrid), but I’m only half way through the first, so I’ll get a year, at least.

The Crystal claims to be hypoallergenic, fragrance free, non-sticky, non-staining, leaves no white residue, is cruelty free, environmentally safe. Oh, and it eliminates odor.

Does The Crystal work for me? Yes.

Is The Crystal better at keeping me dry than Arrid Extra Dry? No, but it’s good enough, and costs much less. Plus, there’s no aluminum chlorohydrate, no messy aluminum cans.

If I continued to use Arrid Extra Dry I might get Alzheimers, but at least I’d smell good. If I use only The Crystal, I still may get Alzheimers, but I’d save a little money and won’t feel guilty about all the cans.

Oh, one more thing. The Crystal says it’s cruelty free. That could be a description of anyone using a good deodorant. Those without are definitely pushing the cruelty vibes.

Antiperspirants are a total hazard to one’s health. Deodorants are not as bad, but your solution is far more ideal. If we take the time to really read the labels, we might drop a lot of products. Interesting that Bushco’s policies are to try to reduce or even eliminate the labeling requirements.

I’m going to do a search in Ireland/England for The Crystal. Let you know if I have any success.

Have to look into the friendliest form of shaving cream next.

Tom Coppinger says:

Not a problem. The Crystal is readily available in most health shops around Ireland, and I would assume in the UK as well.

Vic says:

Does The Crystal work as an antiperspirant?

From what I’ve read, that doesn’t seem to be the case. I have also read the antiperspirant-is-bad-for-you rumor has no medical basis in fact. My husband believes the rumor. He uses deodorant, but won’t use an antiperspirant. He smokes 15+ ciggarettes a day, sits for work and recreation, and will only eat something if it’s been deep fat fried and smothered in transfats. When his heart attack comes, I’ll have to wash his shirt twice to get the sweat stains out of it.

I’m addicted to not sweating if I can help it, and I don’t think there’s a 12-step program for that. Further, if I saw Howard Stern coming in my direction, I’d flee in a panic, although I’m sure he’s taken pains to be ‘nice to be near’ for the ladies.

George Stamas says:

I think I kind of went overboard with my comment about antiperpirants being a total hazard to one’s health. The Aluminum based ingredients used in antiperspirants have not been shown to be very problematic for the body. However, some people do have sensitivity to them (as well as some of the perfumes used) and they can cause a rash.
From your description of your husband’s lifestyle, I don’t think what he puts on his underarms is his biggest health threat.
I do feel that when it comes to adding chemicals to our food and other products, less is better.Things like Mercury in dental fillings or the use of Teflon coated cookware are good examples of ubiquitous chemicals that humans might have health problems with.

Tera you can also look at the products from Tom’s of Maine.

They have a line of all natural products.  I’ve been using their toothpaste and deodorant for years, no aluminium, nothing artificial.

Leigh L Pang says:

My experience has been that antiperspirants and deodorants didn’t really stop you from smelling bad anyway. They just changed the nature of the bad smells.

The crystal is pretty neat though and I don’t care what any text claims about aluminum not being hazardous. The fact is aluminum has no useful function in human biological processes, so I’m staying clear of letting it into my body.

Well....it’s been 3 weeks now of using nothing but The Crystal. I am a total convert. It works!

I always hated the clumps of white Mitchum clinging to my underarms. Getting my black t-shirts on whilst avoiding them proved tricky. I also hated it when I showered and could feel the Mitchum (or whatever substitute I’d use occasionally) STILL “hanging on” under my arms the next day. I mean, it CAN’T be a good thing.

Read your post Tera and my wife and I now use The Crystal daily. No B.O. Some perspiration but, nothing bothersome or unsightly. I love it. Turned a couple of other skeptics on to it as well.

Thanks for the heads up Tera. I am Clump Free!!
