The truth is out. I’m a news junkie. I can swap between three major news channels with the grace of a politician at rubber chicken fund raiser.
My Mac has a couple of RSS apps that bring me updates every 15 minutes. What bona fide Mac news junkie wouldn’t want to have the latest news scrolling across your Mac’s screen.
Be honest. You know you watch the scrolling tickers on CNN and Fox, right?
Universal Ticker is a Mac app that gives you a scrolling ticker on the screen. It sounds all complex and messy but it’s quite attractive and useful.
Not only does it show the latest news, it also displays whatever music is playing in iTunes, or upcoming events (you set them up).
Setup is simple, too. Adjust the appearance (color and size) of the scrolling ticker, add RSS subscriptions, turn on iTunes, or simply add the current time.
Universal Ticker has a Growl plugin so you can route other Growl notifications through the onscreen ticker.
I have to admit that it did take me a day to really enjoy using a scrolling ticker. It’s not too distracting (I set mine above the Dock).
What I’d like to see is a scrolling list of incoming email, Twitter tweets, Facebook updates, and maybe an iCal alert.
Overall, not as distracting as I expected, and downright useful if you’re stuck watching a Mac screen all day.
